Wyeth Tires Porcelain Curved Advertising Sign

Realizing that some of the rarest, most beautiful porcelain advertising signs ever designed may never be acquirable, VAULT® has created a very limited
collection of hand-built originals of some of the world’s most sought-after classics. Like this Wyeth Tires sign featuring the whimsical image of a
young motorist wearing a duster emblazoned with the Wyeth coat of arms sits inside a stack of three tires. In 2013, an original Wyeth Tires curved
sign sold for $32,000 at auction.

A client recently commissioned VAULT® to handcraft a Wyeth Tires porcelain sign. Using an original sign as our guide, the process and materials that were used to create the very limited production of only three (3) porcelain sign is virtually unchanged from those that were used by the original manufacturer.

Much time and effort was put into creating an incomparable re-creation of a historic vintage sign that otherwise would never have been previously possible to display. In creating these signs, we hope to promote appreciation and preservation a golden age of American advertising. This is the last available sign of the limited edition set of only three signs and once it is sold, they will never be made again, adding to their future collectability.

Like everything we do that is made at VAULT®, this sign was handcrafted with pride by artisans here in the United States of America.

What Does The ‘Gateway Arch’ In St. Louis Have In Common With Vault Cabinets?

Garage storage cabinets, whether they are used to store hand tools, power tools, gardening equipment, sporting goods equipment, paint, Rubbermaid containers, boxes, cleaning supplies or automobile products, requires a much different, higher, level of construction quality than can be found in kitchen or closet cabinets.

The garage is a harsh environment where extreme temperature and humidity changes can wreak havoc on cabinets. It is also a place within the home where bulkier, heavier items tend to be stored. In many cases, there are items, such as gardening equipment, sporting goods equipment and automobile items that are exclusively stored in the garage and nowhere else.

Shelves must be built adequately to accommodate the weight load demands of heavy items such as 5-gallon buckets, cans of paint, boxes and other bulky items. Drawers must be built to stand up to the abuse from more frequent opening and closing and operate smoothly while being weighted down with heavy items such as hand tools and power tools.

Certain raw materials are better choices than others from which to build storage cabinets from to provide clients with the best return-on-investment. Across the board, stainless steel is the most popular choice for what buyers look for in home kitchen appliances for a reason: it is beautiful to look at,
it is well known for its excellent combination of long life, corrosion resistance and ease of maintenance. It is also unrivaled in its strength characteristics; whereas aluminum is a soft metal that is easy to dent and scratch, stainless steel has a very high tensile strength that make it one of the most durable raw material choices. You may be surprised to know that the ‘Gateway Arch’, which defines the skyline in St. Louis, Missouri, is clad in 304-grade stainless steel. Construction of the Arch was completed in 1965 and after almost 50 years of being exposed to the elements it is proof to the time-tested endurance of 304-grade stainless steel.

VAULT® selects only the highest quality materials available to build our world-class Professional Series and Designer Series storage cabinets, which is why we are the only manufacturer in North America that handcrafts metal cabinets from Premium-Grade 304 stainless steel.

Our premium-grade stainless steel drawers easily accommodate an extreme amount of weight up to 225lbs without any noticeable fatigue in their operation.

Our heavy-duty stainless steel shelves will accommodate 400lbs of weight per shelf with no fatigue.

If you desire a metal cabinet that will give you the best return on investment long-term, no other raw material can beat 304-grade stainless steel.

Customer Testimonial: Paradise Valley, AZ

When you walk into this Paradise Valley, Arizona garage it appears that a line of cabinets conclude with a large Armoire that is recessed into an alcove. But upon closer inspection, you notice that they are actually custom swing-doors that when opened allow entrance into a storage room, which the homeowner wanted to conceal, yet gain access to a back room. From the front, you’d never know the back room even existed. How cool is that?

VAULT® worked very closely with both a designer and installer on this project to conceive a personalized solution so that the homeowner could get exactly what he wanted. Having already owned Gladiator products made by Whirlpool, the homeowner gave his contractors instructions to find him something that was as effective as it is beautiful. The contractors recommended to the client that he attend the Barrett-Jackson auction, where he saw first-hand cabinets built by Moduline and Baldhead, among other manufacturers. Ultimately, he decided to purchase Designer Series cabinets by VAULT® sight-unseen based on our reputation for quality and customer service. That was quite a leap of faith.

This morning we received a note from the homeowner and here is what he had to say about his satisfaction in choosing VAULT®:

“Thanks for your perseverance in getting the door right. Everything looks great. It’s still a work in progress, since I am still working on stuff for the
walls and better lighting and power access.

The cabinets look fantastic. They (the cabinets) are a huge hit with everyone who visits.”

The designer had this to say:

“I have been familiar with (VAULT®) for eight years at least. I am very familiar with (their) product. I’ve been to Oregon to see it first-hand, worked with VAULT on a few projects, including one going in here next week (in Paradise Valley) and they deliver a first class product … and the high level of quality they put into their product(s).”

Vintage Original Gilmore Gasoline Masonite Sign

Very excited to have acquired this rare sign. In its original condition, this circa early 1940’s Gilmore Gasoline service station sign is a great example of early West Coast service station history. This exterior advertising sign would have hung outside of a Gilmore station and were made from Masonite, which in addition to being used as advertising signs such as billboards and point-of-sale signs, it was also used for many other applications including doors, roofing, walls, desktops, and canoes. It was sometimes even used as house siding.

Although clearly not as durable as tin or porcelain advertising signs, Masonite was used during wartime as a result of rationing that the US Government found necessary in order to save metal to build tanks, ships, planes, and weapons, which required massive amounts of metal. A single tank needed 18 tons of metal, and one of the navy’s biggest ships took 900 tons. Anything using metal — from chicken wire to farm equipment — was rationed. Americans were urged to turn in scrap metal for recycling, and schools and community groups across the country held scrap metal drives. As a result of the rations, metal advertising signs were very limited in their production during the war and because scrap metal was being recycled, many metal advertising signs were scrapped.

Because Masonite was susceptible to the effects of weathering, the graphics on many of these signs were lost and very few of them lasted the test of time. Furthermore, when Gilmore was purchased by Mobil, most of the Gilmore advertisements were no longer needed and were tossed away. It is amazing that this sign still exists today, some 75 years later.

This particular sign has fantastic, colorful graphics, that were made by Vitachrome of Los Angeles, where it is known today as the oldest screen printer on the West Coast.

The Gilmore company name is a familiar to people who call Los Angles home for founding the Farmers Market, which to this day is a central meeting place for Angelenos – “Meet me at 3rd and Fairfax” is still one of the most common phrases in the city. It also remains a must-see tourist attraction in Southern California.

All of this collectively together make this very rare, beautiful piece of early American advertising truly a one-of-a-kind item.

Size is 60.5”-long x 26”-tall

Restoration & Re-Creation of Historic Signs

A few years ago, we purchased an antique porcelain Ford dealership sign at the Portland Swap meet. Although the sign was in relatively good condition considering its age, it was originally a double-sided and had beautiful art deco curved wings with neon that wrapped around both sides. Because the sign was missing its curved ends, neon and the other oval panel that would have complemented the side we purchased, it sat in our inventory until we began to get ambitious.

Fortunately, we found another sign similar to ours and the owner was kind enough to allow us to use his sign to re-create some of the parts that were missing. Starting with hand-cut templates, we mapped out the original hole locations and to form the curves of the curved ends, which were additionally complicated by having a specific flange on the ends of them that allowed them to seamlessly connect to the main oval sign face.

Once we had the templates built for the missing pieces and our forms followed the correct curvature of the curved end caps, we began an exhaustive effort to match the distinctive Ford blue exactly. If the color was not a spot-on match to the original sign it would defeat the purpose of re-creating the lost parts if they did not match up. This took quite a few firings before the match was identical. It turns out that Ford used numerous sign companies across the world to manufacture dealership signs and so there were subtle differences among manufacturers, like Mulholland Sign Co (of Kalamazoo, Michigan was one of the most prevalent), Cook Sign Co, and other sign companies that made each sign distinctly unique. In our case, our sign was clearly a darker shade of blue and different than Mulholland signs we have seen. Originally manufactured by Cook Sign Company, which was based in Fargo, North Dakota, our sign was just slightly different, so getting the right shade of color was very important.

Now that the correct porcelain shade of blue was achieved, we could begin work on laser cutting and hand forming the parts so that they could match the same tolerances as the originals.

While all of this work was happening on the parts, we were working on re-creating the artwork. Some parts were placed on a high resolution scanner, while other large parts too large or complicated to scan, were photographed, the images of which were imported into Adobe Illustrator and/or Photoshop. While most poor quality ‘reproductions’ simply scan an image and use the software to create a vector image, we spend countless hours hand-drawing each nuance and detail. On complicated projects we have spent upwards to 25 hours on some signs to draw every detail to re-create artwork.

If one examines how porcelain signs were originally manufactured one can begin to understand how to re-create the same effects. This has taken VAULT® ten years of exhaustive research and making numerous prototypes, some of which turned out great, but most of which just did not have the quality we were seeking to achieve. It was, at times, nerve-racking. Going through this process, we learned a lot throughout the years:

For example, there are a subtle details that are found in original signs (circa 1920’s-1930’s) that give them character. For starters, the lettering, oval and bands on original Ford oval signs, were all created through hand-cut stencils by someone using either a blade or cutters who may not have had the steadiest of hand. This introduced a slight, yet constant, wavering in the lines of the artwork. If you examine an original sign closely, this slight wavering of art gives the sign less than perfect lines.

Then prior to firing a sign in the kiln, when the template (or whatever mask or screen) was removed by the sign maker, it may have “chipped” the edges of the thick dry porcelain on a very small scale in some places, but not everywhere. Because many original signs sprayed the porcelain frit onto the sign faces, there can also be signs of overspray, creating even more details, like shelving . All of these nuances are not imperfections, they are simply part of what gives original signs their appeal.

Our obsessive attention to re-creating all of these details took an enormous amount of effort, but without perfect artwork, the smallest of these details that are inherent in original signs simply cannot be captured.

Once the vector artwork is finished, the cut and shaped sign blanks can finally go into production. Depending on the sign and what parts are being re-created, hand-cut stencils (for simple artwork) or silkscreens (for detailed artwork) are made. The artwork is then fired in a large furnace at temperatures over 1,350 degrees, which permanently fuses the porcelain art to the enameling steel, creating porcelain panels with brilliant colors, a durable finish and incredible resistance. In the case of the Ford signs, which were two color signs (blue and white) the sign had be fired a total of three separate times to achieve the art (first the base coat, then each color).

Because the process and materials that are used to create a VAULT® porcelain sign are virtually unchanged from those used by the original manufacturers, the end result is an incomparable re-creation of a historic vintage sign that otherwise would never have been previously possible.

This has been a very ambitious undertaking in which much time and effort has been put into making all of these parts, without which a complete sign would not have been possible. Our hope is that our work will get ordinary people excited about porcelain signs. The reaction that we want to elicit from people is ‘This is so cool’. The reaction that we want from our customers is to go beyond their expectations. Both are a tall order, but after a decade of working at this, I am comfortable saying that we have achieved perfection in the craft of porcelain sign making. We are very proud of the quality of these restorations and re-creations. We hope you feel the same.

VAULT Designed and Furnished Garage in Minnesota Appears in Robb Report

[An overview of this project has been reprinted with permission of Robb Report. A hand-written testimonial, which appears below this article, which we received from this client was also reprinted with his permission.]

Scott needed a hobby. At least, that was his wife’s opinion a few years ago. So, at her urging, the 51-year-old gave it some thought. He came to the conclusion that his passion in life is cars and he decided to build a 1,200-square-foot garage adjacent to his home near Minneapolis, Minnesota that would reflect that interest. However, he discovered long ago that he’s not the type to pop the hood and get his fingers greasy, so he didn’t need a real working man’s garage. “I came to the determination that I’m not the kind of guy who’s going to rebuild a car,” he says. “I do my better thinking when I’m on the road, rather than sitting behind a desk, so I want something that I can just get in and drive”.

To reflect that lifestyle, Scott hired a local artist to paint pastoral road and racetrack scenes as murals on the interior of his three garage doors.
Scott also wanted an “old-world feel” with modern elements, “which he achieved by using stone and exposed wooden beams and by incorporating two vintage styled gas pumps and a few neon signs designed and built by VAULT .”I preferred to go with one or two high-quality pumps than to collect a number of pumps that were less interesting visually. I don’t have a lot of room in there, so I wanted to make sure that what I brought in was of a certain quality.”

But Scott also wanted to include items that he remembered from his childhood, like a Clay Smith Cams woodpecker sign and an arcade-style, bubble hockey game. “They were things that I always admired and wanted as a kid and finally could afford to buy, ” Scott says of the accent pieces that now decorate his garage. “So I guess I never grew up entirely.”

With an adjoining room that houses a billiard table and a large-screen television, Scott finds that he spends plenty of time in the garage, much to
his wife’s chagrin. However, he does acknowledge that his wife had a hand in its design and loves how the space turned out. “Everything that she did added to the garage and, quite frankly, I don’t know that I would’ve done quite as good a job,” he says. “It’s probably nicer than I ever envisioned.”

TESTIMONIAL DIRECTLY FROM CLIENT FEATURED IN THIS ARTICLE

[This written letter was reprinted with the client’s permission.]

Dear Mr. Haas,

Nearly eighteen months ago I began researching high quality cabinets for my detached car garage. It was not an easy process, finding, sorting and defining the multitude of quality cabinets on the internet, in magazines and at various wholesalers. As I continued to triangulate recurring quality observations (things such as fit, finish, durability and “eye candy appeal” VAULT continued to be at the top.

After sending my initial down payment I had that slight bit of concern many of us have when we mail thousands of dollars to someone we have never meet for something they will send in two months. However, that is where I left most of my concerns. Your constant attention to questions I posed, production of drawings, timelines, and follow-up information told me that there was a professional operation at work here.

There was one nagging issue in the back of my mind, will the cabinets arrive damaged or showing signs of a rushed painting and assembly process? No, those fears started to be allayed when you contacted me to say you was rejecting some of the finished product because of an orange peel effect in the painting and things would be pushed back two weeks. Now I am thinking good, VAULT really cares, if this is his level of concern for quality then I only need to now worry about them arriving undamaged. Well, that worry was unnecessary as well, before they arrived you provided me with instructions on how to examine them for damage and each crate would have a number of “shock” monitors to ensure they had not been dropped, wow I was impressed, I could not wait to see them.

That day arrived and I must say THESE CABINETS WERE WORTH EVERY PENNY, I cannot count the number of people that see them and are WOWED BY THE LOOK AND THE QUALITY. I frankly do not know how or where I would have found anything near the quality VAULT has provided.

Having established this high level of trust with VAULT for my cabinets I became more and more intrigued with some of the “novelty” items VAULT offered. Having become very well acquainted with your company during my cabinet building process I started to feel you had a grasp on the level of quality I was looking for from these other items. First I purchased a large neon sign you had in inventory, wow it was great! I knew at this point the finishing touches in my garage could finally come together.

Your company displayed a real and sincere interest in helping me put the garage together in the right way requesting pictures and drawings.

Today, after a large number of cabinets, five custom neon’s, one gas pump, three hand painted glass pictures, one neon art glass clock, a crankshaft lamp and an antique oil display stand later I am done. Everything was engineered, drafted, developed, constructed and shipped by VAULT through their extensive network of suppliers from around the globe. I cannot say enough about how proud I am of the items I have purchased from you. I have continued to reflect upon the experience and I keep coming back and summing it up with one word “INTEGRITY”. Integrity in advertising, integrity for the process and in the treatment of me as the customer, and integrity in construction, attention to detail and delivery of the product.

I can say with the utmost confidence that I would not hesitate to recommend VAULT to anyone and everyone that appreciates quality and beauty in design. VAULT delivers because you hold the company standards to not only meet, but EXCEED MY EXPECTATIONS.

– SCOTT
